As of April 2007, the American Heart Association guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis were changed to include only those patients at greatest risk for bacterial endocarditis. This means that if you needed antibiotics prior to dental treatment in the past, it is a good idea to speak with your physician to see if prophylaxis is still necessary. For more information, please read the article on the American Heart Association website.
